What We Believe

At First United Methodist Church, we believe in living out the love of God in the world.

We believe in God who created us as beloved children, who sustains us, who loves us, and who redeems us.

We believe in Jesus Christ as God’s love made flesh in the world. We strive to be his disciples in the world and to follow his teachings of love, justice, and mercy.

We believe in the Holy Spirit who empowers us for ministry in the world. The Spirit challenges, changes, and renews us by being God in our midst.

We believe that the Church is an extension of Christ’s life and ministry in the world today. Our church works to share the love of Christ with our community and our world.

We believe that the writers of the Bible were inspired by God. We hold that the Holy Spirit works today in our thoughtful study of the Scriptures, especially as we study them together, seeking to relate the old words to life’s present realities.

We affirm all persons as equally valuable in the sight of God. We therefore work toward societies in which each person’s value is recognized, maintained, and strengthened. We deplore acts of hate or violence against groups or persons based on race, color, national origin, ethnicity, age, gender, disability, status, economic condition, sexual orientation, gender identity, or religious affiliation. We respect the inherent dignity of all persons.

We affirm the natural world as God’s handiwork and dedicate ourselves to its preservation, enhancement, and faithful use by humankind.

We believe that God is Love. Every person is created in the image of God, breathed into by the Spirit of God, and claimed by the love of God.

Everyone is welcome here.
